Every pet deserves a loving, caring home, but the sad truth is that not all animals are provided one. All too often, people will take far less care of their pets than they should. Animal rescuers experienced the result of that firsthand after they discovered a cold and abandoned dog lying in a crate on a desolate road in Dallas, Texas, one day.
What was already a shocking situation became more dumbfounding when the rescuers approached the poor animal. They were already on high alert, but when they noticed something moving close by, tensions rose to a fever pitch…
Animal rescuer Leslie Ysuhuaylas knew more than anyone that not every pet was able to live in a home full of love and affection, even though that was exactly what they deserved. Rarely was that more obvious than when she made a startling discovery not long ago.
Leslie had been working with the Underdog Project in Dallas, Texas, to help feed stray dogs. That was when she spotted a two-year-old Sharpei mix, later named Benny, trying to keep warm in a crate she’d left out earlier.
It was freezing outside—just about 20 degrees—and the poor pup seemed injured. He truly looked like he was on his last legs. Still, Leslie wasn’t surprised to see him there, and the reason why would break any animal lover’s heart…
Leslie almost expected to find a dog like Benny because it was an area where dogs were commonly abandoned by their owners. Since that remote part of Dallas didn’t see much traffic, people thought they could get away with dumping their unwanted animals there.
Perhaps most shocking of all? Leslie discovered another abandoned pup within feet of Benny. It was clear this second dog—whom the rescue team named Betty—were friends, and Betty refused to leave her injured pal. The looks on the dogs’ faces when they were found were simply devastating.
Both of the pups were hungry. There was an empty Styrofoam food container lying a few feet from them, but the food was long gone. Rescuers had no idea how long it had been since either of them had a full meal.
Leslie immediately contacted Rescue Dogs Rock NYC for help. This team of dedicated dog lovers were willing to do whatever they could to lend a hand. Naturally, they jumped at the chance to help Benny and Betty.
“When they discovered Benny in the box in critical condition, there was another dog next to him,” confirmed a spokesperson for Rescue Dogs Rock NYC on the group’s Facebook page. “We suspect [she] had been living in this area unprotected for weeks, freezing to death right beside Benny.”
Before Rescue Dogs Rock NYC could step in, however, both dogs needed immediate care—especially Benny. So the team at the Underdog Project arranged for him to be sent to a local veterinary emergency center where he could promptly begin treatment for his condition.
Meanwhile, Benny seemed like he had given up all hope. He’d spent so much time alone and afraid, and it probably seemed like things were never going to look up again. Little did he know that he was finally in good hands!
Leslie documented Benny’s condition in a detailed Facebook post: “Benny is on an IV as he is completely dehydrated, weak, and starved,” she explained. “X-rays were taken of Benny’s leg and chest.”
“His head is very swollen, and the medical staff is continuing to run tests to figure out why,” Leslie reported. She knew the caring professionals at the hospital wouldn’t give up on the pup until he was completely healed, but it still concerned her.
“As you can see, it cost the rescue close to $2,100 just for the night,” Leslie said. “Benny will get the very best care.” The rescuers had no problem paying for Benny’s treatment and refused to let the high costs get in the way of a dog’s well-being.
Because Benny’s injuries required stitches, he needed a cone placed around his head so he wouldn’t keep aggravating them while they healed. He wasn’t thrilled about his new headgear, but it was all part of the process to get him back on his feet. But what about his pal, Betty?
Of course, just because Benny’s condition was more severe didn’t mean that his loyal pal was going to be left behind. “Betty spent the night last night, safe and warm, never to be on the streets again,” said Leslie.
Leslie continued with her update on Betty: “She will be transported to our Texas vet partner for a full medical workup, to make sure she’s up to date on shots, altered and there are no underlying medical issues that need to be addressed.”
Finally, it looked like both Benny and Betty could make full recoveries. They were now in terrific hands, and the medical staff promised to do everything they could to ensure that both dogs never had to relive the horrible experience they went through.
As soon as the dogs were healthy enough to travel, they were going to make the journey to New York in hopes of finding a loving family to bring them in. From the looks of these pups, it wasn’t going to take long!
It’s so sad that people would just abandon these poor dogs on the side of the road. Let’s hope both Benny and Betty make full and speedy recoveries!
