The relationship between your body and your mood is a complex one. Anybody who has ever had acupuncture or acupressure treatments can speak to the way slight physical changes or sensations can completely alter the way you feel, both physically and mentally!
In the same realm as those two techniques is the traditional Japanese art of jin shin jyutsu. This therapy treats one of the most overworked parts of the body—the hands—in order to result in major improvements in mental health.
Once you see how it works, you just might want to try it for yourself…
Our moods are almost directly correlated to how healthy our bodies are. If you’ve ever had an acupuncture session, then you know how making slight physical changes to certain areas of our skin can actually alter the way we feel mentally.
Most people don’t know this, but our hands are incredibly important when it comes to maintaining a healthy mind. This is why hand massages are so beneficial; each part of the hand represents a different pressure point that directly correlates to another area of the body and mind.
Jin shin jyutsu is a traditional Japanese therapy that treats issues like anxiety or depression through the manipulation and stimulation of the hands and fingers, which are some of the most overworked parts of the body.

This unique therapy first gained attention in the Western world through the work of Mary Burmeister. She was responsible for bringing the healing techniques developed by Japanese practitioner Jiro Murai to the United States.

The beauty of jin shin jyutsu is that it can be practiced anywhere and at any time, providing relief for a variety of emotional states like stress, fear, anger, depression, and anxiety. It’s amazing how many emotions resonate through your fingers.

One of the things that jin shin jyutsu tries to do is help to align your chakras. Chakras are major energy points throughout the body that, when working at full capacity, help you maintain a healthy and positive state of mind.
As the diagram below shows, each finger is related to a different state of mind and different body parts. When you feel a particular emotion that you’d like to quell or anxious tension somewhere in your body, simply refer to the chart to know which part of your (dominant) hand to tackle!
Once you’ve identified the correct finger, firmly grasp it with your other hand and apply very slight tension. Focus on the mental state you’re trying to conquer while slowly inhaling and exhaling and taking deep breaths.
Within minutes you can begin to feel your stress slip away and your mood brighten! If you don’t feel any difference immediately, this is normal, and all you need to do is give it a few minutes and try the technique again.
