Everyone wanted Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle to be a powerful duo of royal BFFs. Think of the fashion moments we could’ve had with those two stylish ladies on one red carpet! But sadly it wasn’t to be: the Duchess of Sussex has made her exit as a working royal, and according to some, the sisters-in-law may never really reconcile. It’s obvious that their relationship is a complex one — and these photos prove it.
Thick as thieves
Back in 2018 when Kate and Meghan were snapped laughing together at Wimbledon, onlookers were delighted to see how well the sisters-in-law seemed to be getting on. However, the now-infamous argument about bridesmaid dresses (allegedly) had already happened by the time this photograph was taken. Were Kate and Meghan putting on a show for the cameras here? Or were they really, genuinely getting along like a house on fire? Nobody knows for sure, but it’s nice to see them looking so happy.

One hot topic of the 2022 Harry & Meghan documentary was how different the media’s treatment of Meghan has been compared to Kate. Meghan has suggested that while she was attacked by the British press for certain behavior, Kate was praised for doing the exact same thing. Kate and Meghan got into a minor style-off during the 2017 Christmas Day church service, an event that can often serve as an accidental winter fashion show for the female royals. Kate walked away the victor from that one, though. Commentators on the internet thought Meghan’s brown hat looked like — wait for it — the “poo emoji.” Oh dear. But there was no animosity in their faces back in those days… if anything, Meghan seemed to be looking at Kate admiringly.
