Strange Traffic Laws In Each State That Went Right Over People's Heads

We all know to hit the brakes at a stop sign and that you can’t turn left on a red light. But there are some traffic laws so obscure, so random, and so completely pointless that no driver’s ed class would ever even think about teaching them. Here’s a look at 40 of the strangest from 40 different states.

40. You can drive the wrong way down a one-way street, but only if you have a lantern (Alabama)

You shouldn’t be driving incorrectly down a one-way street in the first place, of course. But if you happen to lose your bearings in Alabama you could also get in trouble for not having a lantern placed at your car’s front. The rule stems from when horses used to roam the roads yet remarkably it’s still in place today.

39. Don’t tie your dog to your roof (Alaska)

We’d like to know exactly why the state known as The Last Frontier felt it necessary to put this law into place. Or maybe we wouldn’t. Let’s just hope that Alaskan natives have now fully adhered to the rule clarifying that you should, under no circumstances, tie man’s best friend to the roof of your car.

38. Don’t reverse on a public road (Arizona)

You may be a master at reverse parking. But don’t even think about showing off this particular skill if you’re looking for a space on a public road in Arizona. The Grand Canyon State’s made it illegal for anyone to drive backwards, no matter how briefly, on such a surface.

37. No honking outside sandwich shops (Arkansas)

Little Rock’s nothing if not ridiculously precise. If you happen to be driving in the Arkansas city after 9:00 p.m. and suddenly fancy a BLT, then be careful not to honk your horn. Way back in 1938 this act was made illegal in front of any cold drink stalls or sandwich shops.
