Vintage Photos Of Grocery Stores Are Giving Us A Whole New Perspective

Getting groceries was always a wild errand. At the store, you could hear all of the hot gossip between the aisles, and of course, you could browse all those wonderful vintage brands that you’ve since forgotten existed. These photos of supermarkets back in the day will bring back loads of memories — and maybe get your mouth watering, too.

Dressed up

Chain supermarkets these days allow their workers to dress in more casual uniforms. These are definitely more comfortable than the more formal attire that staff had to wear in the middle of the 20th century. And employees weren’t the only ones who were dressed up.

Making a day of it

Sweatpants and a white tee shirt suffice just fine today, but for many, a trip to the supermarket decades ago meant getting dolled up! Who knew who you’d run into?

Curls out

Then again, seeing a homemaker in her rollers wouldn’t be uncommon, either. To ensure they had enough time to prep dinner, women would set their curls at the store, killing two birds with one stone.

Not everything under the Sun

With diversified imports and enough genetic engineering for man-made fruits, today’s supermarket goods are a far cry from what was available in the early part of the last century. It used to be mostly local goods and produce — well, goods from the same country at least! Also, shoppers often bought their veggies from dedicated produce stands.
